Zoo Education Classes and Camps

Zoo Education Broadens the Realization of Animals (Z.E.B.R.A.)

Z.E.B.R.A. Classes at Dickerson Park Zoo open the amazing world of animals to children from tots to teens. Encourage curiosity, appreciation and wonder with up-close animal encounters where students learn through hands-on activities and experiences, crafts, stories and games, all designed to instill a lifelong love of learning and animal conservation and care.  All education classes take place in the Gaska Family Education Wing building located a short drive from the front gate.  See map for details.  Registration for classes closes at noon one day prior to date of the class to allow teachers time to prepare.  

Before registering for a class you must register for our website. It's free and easy. Just use the link below and then you can sign-up for classes once you are logged in.  When you add classes to your cart they are not added to the cart in the main menu My Cart.  They are added to Classes Booking Cart at the very top.  Use that to see your cart.  Additionally, during the booking process, you are presented with buttons to the cart in page.

Strollers on Safari!

Put on your walking shoes and bring your stroller on safari! Each month we will travel with an educator to explore a continent, meet native animal ambassadors, and have an engaging zoo insider lead tour. For everyone’s safety and enjoyment, unregistered children (including siblings) may not attend. We will reschedule due to inclement weather. Where to meet: Join us at the entry of the Gaska Family Education Wing building located a short drive from the front gate. Strollers on Safari takes place outside, so dress for the weather. Come explore with DPZ!

Ages: 0-4, with an adult
Cost: FOZ members $15 for one child with an adult, each add’l child $2.50

Pre K Half Day Camps
Safety First!
There are so many ways for people to stay safe. Wearing life jackets in a boat, applying sunscreen, and using walking feet are all ways we can keep out bodies safe. But what about animals? How do animal keep their bodies safe? In this day camp, preschooler students will put their thinking caps to the test as we discuss the many ways animals stay safe and the reasons why. Join Ms. Jamie as we tour the zoo, meet animal friends, and learn important safety lessons. While on out safety safari, we might get a little bit messy, so students should wear clothes they don’t mind getting wet or dirty. Safety first! No open toed shoes please. This is a child-only class.

Whooo’s Awake at Night? A look at nocturnal animals
Late at night, while you’re asleep, many animals quietly prowl through the moonlight. Whooo are these animals, and why do they prefer the dark? Our curiosity journey will take us out on zoo grounds to visit some of our own nocturnal animals. Please dress for the weather and wear closed toe shoes. This is a child-only class.

Kindergarten and 1st Grade One Day Summer Camps

Classy Classification
Animals are sorted into groups-but why? In this exciting day camp, students will compare animals large and small, in this celebration of classification.  Camp will include live animals, biofacts, and observation and investigation activities using scientific techniques.  We will also visit these animals on zoo grounds and complete a few crafts along the way.  Please pack a lunch that does not require refrigeration (reusable containers are preferred).

Zany Zoology
Zoology is the study of animals, and some of those animals are down-right weird! During this camp, the wonderfully weird creatures of the world will prove to us that there is nothing wrong with being different. We might get messy, so please wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet or dirty and wear closed toe shoes. Please pack a lunch that does not require refrigeration (reusable containers are preferred).

Amazing Animal Architects

Primate-Palooza

Each camper takes home a piece of artwork “painted” by a zoo animal!  Please pack a lunch that does not require refrigeration (reusable containers are preferred).

Hoofin’ It

Zoo Careers

Who works behind-the-scenes to run the zoo?  In this camp students meet various zoo staff and learn about the day-to-day activities of those who work in close contact with the animals, as well as others who are vital to maintaining a zoo.  If you are interested in a career in animal care, wildlife conservation, or veterinary medicine, this is the camp for you!
